A Little About Standalone Multi-Channel Digital Video Recorders...

Standalone CCTV DVR Units are direct replacement for VHS type video recorders. Modern CCTV DVR not only replaces VCR itself but also switcher and/or multiplexer commonly used in the past. Every CCTV DVR has a built in network adapter allowing remote access and remote viewing. Great feature to watch your home or business when you are away. Most of the CCTV DVR units can be connected directly to TV via RCA Vide In port. Newer models are also equipped with VGA port, so they can be connected directly to any standard PC monitor. The newest models feature HDMI port with 720p, 1080p and up to 4K video output. These Digital Video Recorders can be connected to HD TV to get most out of your CCTV System. The most common way to categorize CCTV Digital Video Recorders is by number of Video Inputs (Number of CCTV Cameras that can be connected to one DVR). So we have 4 chennel DVR (up to 4 CCTV Cameras Capability), 8 Channel DVR (up to 8 CCTV Cameras) 16 Channel DVR (up to 16 Cameras) and 32 Channel DVR Units. Many CCTV Digital Video Recorders can also record audio (from connected microphone). Maximum number of microphones that you can connect to a single DVR unit is described Audio In (usually 1~16). It does not have to match number of video channels. Next important feature when buying CCTV DVR is FPS Number (frames per second). Real time DVR can record 30 fps per each camera. Let’s say we have 4ch DVR. Real time recording is only possible when DVR is rated 120fps (4ch x 30 fps). Also it is important to remember that technical specification for CCTV DVR usually shows maximum number FPS for recording in standard resolution. This number may be much lower if recording in 2K or 4K resolution (Highest Resolution). Top of the line DVR units can record real time video w/ 30FPS for every camera in 4K resolution. Please remember that recording in High resolution with 30fps uses a lot of hard drive space and usually is not required. Standard for CCTV System is about 12 fps for each camera. Resolution: CIF, Half D1, D1 (or described by number of pixels i.e. 320x240 or 720x480) and HD Resolutions 720p, 1080p or 2 Megapixel, 2K or 4 Megapixel and 4K or Ultra HD 8 Megapixel. Resolution is a very important factor. High resolution produces better quality picture. You can see more details, and it is easier to identify suspects. Another important factor is video codec. H.264 and H.265 is a standard now. It allows DVR to compress video, and get maximum recording time without loosing quality. It is also important when broadcasting video on internet. Older codecs include MPEG4 or JPEG2000. Every CCTV DVR has its own list of features. Sometimes it is very long and may be confusing. You can always contact us, if you have any questions. Also you need to remember that technical specification doesn’t tell everything. It is like with buying TV. You see the difference when compared side by side.
